The main issue is that animals cannot control what's around them. They want to get out but can't. It stems from the chronic stress. Stress from having another hamster in the enclousure, or not having a companion for rats and guinea pigs. Maybe picking animals to play with when they don't want to, or just interrupting their sleeping cycle. All these small events affect brain in the long-term.
