The Artist & The Art
The Artist
Hi there, my name is Gloria. I'm a co-founder of Hamsty Lab and a Neuroscientist by profession. What am I doing in art?
Art has always been my passion. I had a lovely opportunity in my early years to attend an evening art school in Moscow. It was just for 6 years, as my family couldn't afford it after that, yet it was enough to give me basic skills and curiosity.
For the next 11 years I focused on studying biology. Occasionally on holidays, some glimpse of creativity crossed my mind and I made crafts and photography. But as I finished my Bachelor's in 2024 I realised a part of me was lacking without painting.
Return to Art
In summer 2024 I got my first commision request. I had to interpret a phrase and I really liked how it turned out. That's my biggest painting so far, A2 Acrylics x Canvas. It is quite metaphorical and I love how people take their time to think about it.
A year later, in 2025 I made Hamsty Lab and this store that I put my soul into. <3
Art for Animals
Art is a big part of my animal advocacy. In the world full of sadness, cruelty and grief I'd like turn to something beautiful, meaningful and lasting.
I created an Artwork series called "See the Identity" that shows that even small animals have personalities.
We also recently made a special collection of original artwork and designs with rescued animals to help raise funds for small animal rescues.
Choosing Quality
In a world of disposable, mass-produced things, I want to make something that lasts.
All the paint used to make custom portraits, whether watercolour, pastel or oil, is Professional Artist's quality.
All the prints, bookmarks and cards are printed using certified Archival paper that is meant to last.
Towards Vegan Art
As you may know, our entire family is vegan for animals. I embrace this in my art as well, as I believe there is no beauty with cruelty.
Since I went vegan, I no longer buy supplies that contain animal-derived ingredients. The difficulty comes when a company doesn't explicity state how a material was produced. That's why I decided to gradually move towards suppliers that are explicitly vegan.
An interesting fact - I loved film photography but had to find an alternative. On the photo you see a film-like effect from a digital Fujifim camera. You can be ethical at anything - all it takes is a will.
Towards plastic-free art
We are on a mission to embrace sustainability. There are so many things yet to learn, but here are our recent improvements:
- Plastic-reduced shipping. Most packaging is plastic-free; we use compostable PLA to protect and display Pastel Artwork and Art Prints.
- No to acrylic paint and microplastics it produces
- FSC-certified paper for our notebooks and sketchbooks
For some items we're still looking for alternatives - stickers and paperback notebook lamination. Pastel Artwork also involves a small styrofoam supportive sheet that we aim to replace once we run out. We're always open to ideas and suggestions.
